///WRITTEN REVIEW///

- Overview -

So despite its overall dive watch aesthetic, and capable underwater specs, the Yacht Master isn’t technically a dive watch… It’s bezel is bi-directional, meaning it can turn either way! A true dive bezel should only turn in one direction, meaning if you were actually relying on it to time your oxygen levels, you cant accidentally turn it to show more time than your oxygen would allow

But function and specs aren’t really what the Yacht Master’s about! Rolex will tell you It’s true function is to easily time the ten minute intervals of a sailing regatta, hence the name. But let’s not kid ourselves, this watch will likely reside firmly on the Rivera!

Think pool side bars, high end restaurants or the deck of a super yacht, with the sea and any thought of getting wet a distant afterthought!

- Size -

Coming in with a dimension of 39.5mm across the bezel, a thickness of 11.4mm and lug to lug of 47.2mm… The yacht masters dimension set results in an extremely wearable watch. With my callipers the total dimension across the case comes in a 40.5mm. The watch has a lug width of 20mm

- Design -

The case design is more akin to a Daytona than a submariner, with curvaceous case sides and a tapering lug profile. There’s no super-case design here! It’s made from Rolex’s own 904L stainless steel, that’s forged in their own foundry.

Resulting in a more corrosion resistant formula that doesn’t need to be rinsed after exposure to salt water and retains a vivid high polish! Speaking of polish, every visible surface of the case is of high polish, no brushed areas can be found on its outward facing surfaces

This is one of the factors that elevate it more into the luxury space, and away from the submariners tool watch routes. The yacht master retains the submariners overall profile, featuring prominent shoulder crown guards on the right hand side. And like the majority of offerings from Rolex, the famed bubble case back. When it comes to overall ergonomics, Rolex really do excel…

The height dimension of 11.4mm, which on paper is already on the slim side for a diver, is made up of a variety of well proportioned elements. The mid-case itself is only 5mm thick, and being curved, gives the watch a super slim profile on wrist, 3mm is lost in the sloping bezel construction that leads to 0.4mm of visible crystal height!

The last 3mm are made up by the case back, which isn’t visible when on wrist! This results in a watch that sits low and wears like its 8mm thick! Incredibly slim for a watch of this design!

- Wearability -

So when it comes to wearability, honestly, this 40mm yacht master is phenomenal! I’d actually go as far as saying its the best Rolex I’ve experienced! Don’t get me wrong, both the 40 and 41mm submariners wear great! But there’s something about the curved high polished case sides, that visually improve the yacht masters overall fit on wrist!

For a visual comparison, here you can see the yacht master against a selection of other watches on my 6.5 inch wrist. On the left we have a Tudor Black Bay 58. It measures 39mm wide, 11.9mm thick and has a lug to lug dimension of 47.5mm.

On the right we have a Casio F91W. It has a dimension of 34mm, a thickness of 8.4mm and a lug to lug of 37mm. Against the black bay in particular, which has a very similar dimension set, the yacht master appears far slimmer in profile.

- Verdict -

So what’s the verdict on the 40mm Rolex yacht master! Well its a tough one! Size wise its perfection! Genuinely, I can’t think of a better proportioned Rolex, or any dive inspired watch for that matter! But I’ve been wearing it all week to review, and I just don’t love it as a daily wear! to me its unquestionably a watch for formal, smart attire. I don’t think its a watch that can be easily dressed down, at least in my opinion…

Is it a great watch, yes, unquestionably! And would I buy a formal watch at some point, sure. But at this price point, formal, luxurious offerings from the likes of Glashutte original intrigue me more!

At the end to the day its all down to personal taste! buy what you love!
