How can we explain that more than 60% of the inhabitants of West Africa (excluding the Maghreb) are Muslims today? That countries like Mali, Mauritania and Niger have more than 90% Muslims?
You would tend to see this as a logical influence from newly converted North African/Berber populations.
However, the process of Islamization of the region was difficult and took more than a millennium...
Not to mention that it still arouses controversy among historians.
