The Ram Mandir is a Hindu temple complex under construction in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, India. Rama is a Hindu deity who is believed to be an incarnation of Vishnu. According to the ancient Indian epic, Ramayana, Rama was born in Ayodhya. It is being protected by the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. It is believed that the temple is located at Ram Janmabhoomi Sthal, the mythological birthplace of Shri Ram, the main deity of Hinduism. The site is the former site of the Babri Masjid built in the 16th century. Idols of Rama and Sita were installed in the mosque in 1949, before it was attacked and demolished in 1992. The 2019 Supreme Court verdict in the Ayodhya dispute ruled that the disputed land would be donated to Hindus for the construction of a temple, while Muslims would be donated land in nearby Dhannipur for the construction of a mosque. The court referred to a report by the Archaeological Survey of India, which suggested the presence of an un-Islamic structure beneath the demolished Babri Masjid.On 5 August 2020, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed the ground breaking ceremony for the construction of Ram Mandir. On 22 January 2024, Modi was the chief guest at the Ram Mandir Prana Pratishtha (Abhishek) ceremony.
The original design of the Ram Mandir was prepared in 1988 by the Sompura family of Ahmedabad. The Sompuras have contributed to the design of more than 100 temples worldwide for at least 15 generations, including the Somnath Temple.
As of January 2024, the first floor of the temple, including the sanctum sanctorum, is ready. The Prana Pratishtha of the idol of Shri Ram was done on 22 January 2024 at 12:29 pm during the 90-minute auspicious time period. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief guest at the event. Prior to this, various programs had started from 15 January (Makar Sankranti). The Uttar Pradesh government has set aside Rs 100 crore for the Pran Pratishtha. Schools in many states have been declared closed on 22 January. Narendra Modi has called upon people to light diyas in their homes on 22 January. Many famous artists from the film world including Modi and a total of 6000 VVIPs attended the program.
