Come with us on a weekend trip to Zermatt, Switzerland in the Spring! In this video, we’ll explore Zermatt in April, show you hikes with Matterhorn views, and how to take the railway to the top of Gornergrat!

Zermatt is probably not the first location you think of in April, especially if you don’t ski! However, let us tell you why you might consider visiting these mountains for your next trip.

Zermatt is a Swiss mountain resort up at 1,600m surrounding the Matterhorn peak. Whilst it is used as a fantastic ski resort, we decided to visit off season in April. Why? The scenery is stunning with amazing hikes and views of the Matterhorn peak. From the time you get on the train in Milan to the point you arrive in Zermatt, to the top of Gornergrat mountain - you are guaranteed to have beautiful scenery. Even though it was off season, and at times really warm, you will see you can still have fun in the snow!!! As always, check out our itinerary below and please feel free to reach out and ask any questions or leave a comment!!!

Itinerary + Tips - Zermatt (Switzerland)

Travel:
- Lots of options - Zurich, Geneva, Milan airports are all around 3.5 hours away from Zermatt. We felt Milan provided the best value and a good excuse to visit for a day before flying back (clue of our next video!). One tip if you do choose Milan is to fly to Malpensa rather than Bergamo. With short drive / taxi / bus you can get to a station just outside Milan to catch the train to Visp / Zermatt.
- if you do make it on the train from Milan to Visp, the lakes will be on your right hand side. On the train from Visp to Zermatt, the train is panoramic and the views are impressive on both sides.

To do:
Because Zermatt in April is off season, some of the winter activities are already closed, but there are still great things to do!

- Walk up the Zermatt’s highest point to see the sunset and sunrise over The Valley and the Matterhorn.
- Hike to Z’mutt and take in the sights of the lower level valleys, and pretty village hamlets!
- Food Shopping - there a couple of supermarkets around the main town. As you can imagine, Zermatt is really expensive so we would definitely recommend self catering if possible. We would recommend saving at least one restaurant meal for some good Swiss fondue!
- Take the Gornergrat bahn railway from the center of town up to the top of Gornergrat! Sit on the right side of the train for panoramic views of Zermatt. make sure to check the prices online and which hikes and activities are open; they change depending on the season. Also make sure to check the weather when planning your trip; it is a mountain so the weather can be unpredictable!
