In this video, we look at an example of using the technique of contour integration to evaluate a definite integral. This example is a somewhat redundant one, given that it can be evaluated using more elementary methods (e.g. trig substitution), but it's important to study the simpler examples before moving on to the harder ones. We introduce our contour C, and use the estimation lemma together with the residue theorem to evaluate the integral of 1/(x^2 + 1) over [0, infinity]. More to follow.
