Paste Special, Subtract Welcome to the MrExcel Podcast, where we bring you tips and tricks to help you master Excel. In this episode, we'll be discussing how to subtract a value from a column in Excel. This question came up on Quora and while there was already an answer, I wanted to share my own method with you. First, let's take a look at the existing answer on Quora. The suggested method was to create a temporary column and use the formula =D6-3, then copy and paste the values. While this method works, it can be time-consuming and there is no audit trail to track any mistakes. Instead, I suggest using the Paste Special function. Simply copy the value you want to subtract, in this case 3, and then select the column you want to deduct from. Right-click and choose Paste Special, then select Subtract. This will automatically subtract the value from each cell in the selected column. Just make sure to choose Values if the cells have different formats. Now, I must warn you, this method can be risky as there is no audit trail. So make sure to double check your values before deleting the temporary column. But let's face it, even the original method had no audit trail. So it's important to always be careful when working with formulas and functions in Excel.
