Renowned author and Kiswahili expert Ken Walibora has urged the Ministry of Education to ensure schools do not bar students from speaking Kiswahili while in the school compound.

Prof Walibora expressed concern that even though Kiswahili is a national language, many schools still insist that the institutions are “English speaking zones”.

He wants the Education ministry to ensure Kiswahili is given equal weight to English since the constitution recognises the two as national languages.

Many schools limit students to speaking in Kiswahili only in classrooms during the subject’s lesson times.

Speaking during a lecture on Kiswahili and its expanding opportunities at the University of Embu, Prof Walibora said African’s tendency to embrace foreign language is based on neo-colonialism and the false belief that competency in such a language shows a society has advanced.

He said competency in English is not a proof of one’s intelligence or expertise in a certain field.

Prof Walibora cited great innovators among them Chinese, Japanese and Koreans motoring geniuses who have no competency in English or other Western languages.

The author popular for his novel Siku Njema also made a case for recognising sheng’ describing it as one of the varieties of Kiswahili language.

He said young people who are fond of speaking in sheng’ should be let to be as far they use it in appropriate contexts
