Electronic Pet Containment Systems use radio signals to form an invisible barrier around your yard.  A radio transmitter in your home or garage, sends a radio signal to an underground wire installed around the perimeter on your property.  A receiver on your pet’s collar alerts the dog when it approaches the perimeter wire; first with a warning tone, then with a mild harmless shock.

Steps for Installing an Electronic Pet Containment System

1) Read the instructions for your specific electronic pet containment system. The installation process may vary between brands.

2) The first step is to install the transmitter inside your home or garage.  It should be placed on the inside of and exterior wall.   The transmitter should be hung at eye level and near an electrical outlet.

3) Next, ground the transmitter unit to the electrical outlet.  DO NOT PLUG IN THE TRANSMITTER.

4) Connect a twisted pair of wires to the transmitter.  The twisted pair of wires will run to the outer perimeter of your yard.  Due to the negated electrical currents, your pet will be able to pass over the twisted pair.

5) You may have to drill from the interior to the exterior to get the twisted pair from the transmitter to the perimeter of the yard.

6) Use a spade to cut a groove through the yard, from the house to the perimeter.  Using a dulled screwdriver or weed digger, push the  twisted pair into the ground.  Be sure to leave the end of the wire uncovered.  This is where you will connect the exterior perimeter loop (the single wire).

7) The next step is to layout the perimeter wire.  Place the wire where your pet’s invisible boundary will be.

8) A good tip for burying the single wire is to dig the groove with a gas-powered lawn edger.  Be sure the wire is moved a safe distance from the lawn edger before you begin cutting through the lawn.  Ear and eye protection should also be worn while using any piece of power equipment.

9) Using a dulled screwdriver, push the single wire into the ground.  After completing the loop connect both ends of the single wire to the twisted pair.  Use gel-filled wire nuts- this will help waterproof the connections.

10) Plug in the transmitter.  Test your pet’s receiver by walking near the perimeter wire.  DO NOT TOUCH THE METAL PRONGS.  If the receiver beeps, you have successfully installed the system.  If not, unplug the transmitter and check your wire connections.

11) The final step is training your dog to the new system.  Read your owner’s manual for the technique suggested by the manufacturer.

PLEASE REMEMBER that all systems may differ in installation procedure and pet training methods.  Read your owner’s manual completely before beginning installation.
