A colostomy is an operation that creates an opening for the colon, or large intestine, through the abdomen. A colostomy may be temporary or permanent. It is an opening in the belly (abdominal wall) that's made during surgery.
It's usually needed because a problem is causing the colon to not work properly, or disease is affecting a part of the colon and it needs to be removed.
Reasons a colostomy is done include Infection of the abdomen, such as perforated diverticulitis or an abscess. Injury to the colon or rectum. Partial or complete blockage of the large bowel. Colostomy diverts the flow of stool.
Some of the ways by which colostomy is done are:
1. Open surgery
2. Laparoscopic surgery
The position of the stoma will depend on the section of your colon that's diverted, but it's usually on the left-hand side of your tummy, below your waist.
