On Thursday June 27, 2024, the Le Majestic cinema was the scene of a wonderful gathering for the preview of the eagerly-awaited film The Count of Monte Cristo, which opens tomorrow in cinemas across France. The evening began with a presentation of the film by the Mayor of Meaux, Jean-François Copé.  The screening was followed by a fascinating meeting with directors Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte. This interaction offered a rare opportunity to go behind the scenes of the film's creation and understand the artistic and narrative choices that shaped this cinematic work.

The Count of Monte Cristo is a bold, modern adaptation of Dumas' iconic novel, orchestrated by talented directors Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte. Scheduled for a grand release on June 28, 2024, this cinematic work is already shaping up to be a landmark in the adaptation of French literary classics. The trailer, unveiled the previous Tuesday, has aroused keen interest and anticipation among audiences and critics alike.

The victim of a plot, young Edmond Dantès is arrested on his wedding day for a crime he did not commit. After fourteen years in the Château d'If, he manages to escape. Now immensely wealthy, he returns as the Count of Monte Cristo to take revenge on the three men who betrayed him.

The film stars Pierre Niney in the lead role of Edmond Dantès, delivering an intense, nuanced performance that promises to leave a lasting impression. He is surrounded by a talented cast, including Anaïs Demoustier, Laurent Lafitte, Pierfrancesco Favino, and Vassili Schneider. Each actor brings depth and complexity to his or her character, contributing to the film's rich narrative.

Produced by Dimitri Rassam, known for his previous adaptations of Dumas' works with the diptych The Three Musketeers, the film is committed to respecting the essence of the novel while bringing a captivating modernity to it. The directors have expressed their passion for Dumas' work, underlining the honor and responsibility of revisiting such a work.

The 173-minute film explores universal themes of betrayal, love, revenge and redemption. It also reflects on the nature of justice and power, while remaining true to the spirit of adventure and romance of the original novel. Set in picturesque regions of France, as well as in Malta and Cyprus, the film promises to transport viewers back to a tumultuous period in French history. Photography is by Nicolas Bolduc, while Célia Lafitedupont handles the editing, creating a visual narrative as dynamic as it is spellbinding.
