Actors Shahrukh Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Mahira Khan, Sunny Leone Atul Kulkarni

In this Raees review by Bollywoodpataka editor Denzil says it is very clear from frame one that this film is owned by Shahrukh Khan, but surprisingly it’s not owned by him alone joining him, as his nemesis in this action packed Mafiosi story is Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

Storyline

A little bit on the story, it is essentially in three parts.  Raees is set in the Gujarat of the 1970s and ‘80s. A land where Prohibition has been enforced and therefore bootlegging is a big industry. Raees Alam, Shah Rukh Khan‘s character in the film grows up surrounded by the hooch business, along the way making it his own.  He twists and turns the law and the lawmaker with the twirl of his fingers and when that doesn’t work he uses the muscle of the revolver. Director Rahul Dholakia not one to run away from showing a bloody war does just that in Raees where Shahrukh plays the ruthless bloody killer on a rampage in one scene only to redeem that with a very robin hood act in the next. It is that ‘take from the well-heeled to support the poor imagery that makes Raees completely likable in the film even though he is the baddie.

For Shahrukh Khan’s character in the film life is one big party until he meets his nemesis in the form of the law, a cop by the name of Inspector Jaideep Majumdar played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Incidentally in Raees Nawazuddin gets the same kind of entry as Shahrukh in the film and let’s just say it’s full on ‘seeti maar masala’, also that says a lot for the kind of director Dholakia is. Speaking of appeal the director has made a film that will go down well with the masses, Raees is the perfect mass entertainer as they used to say back in the 80’s ‘isme action hai, emotion hai, drama hai,  dance hai , in short yeh poora paisa vasool hai’.

Acting

Shahrukh Khan gets better with every film. Really what began last year with a brilliant dual role in Fan and then went on to a really understated Dr. Jhangir Khan in Dear Zindagi has now gone ‘bad boy with Raees. SRK has turned his lover boy image on its head channeling the big bold baddie with pizazz and style. The Shahrukh Khan from Baazigar and Don is back more ruthless than before. No more is Shahrukh playing to the multiplexes, in Raees he’s playing to the gallery in the small town single screen as well a territory reserved for Salman Khan so far. Finally, oh yes Shahrukh has totally made the khol eyed male cool again.

The other Khan in Raees is a Siddiqui, but no less than any Khan in Bollywood. If Shahrukh Khan’s performance in Raees was any less this would have been Nawaz’s film. The man is brilliant and his good cop act makes for a battle royale with Shahrukh Khan in the film. The quick roll of the eye here the stress on a word there and Nawaz makes his point with effortless ease. His relationship with Raees is a ‘chattis ka akada’. He has once again proven that he is the finest that Bollywood has. Millions will go see Raees for Shahrukh but I would venture to say go watch Raees for Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

Dialogues and music need special mention in Raees. Both Shahrukh Khan’s and Nawaz’s lines in the film remind one of Amitabh Bachchan in Don and Deewar. Many of them  we have heard in the promos but there are a few more  that again make for great mass appeal. Background sound and music has been used well in the film and doesn’t jar

So is there nothing wrong with Raees? Yes there is. For one, its length. The second half tends to drag a bit and could easily have been cut down a whole 10 to 15 minutes to make it a tighter entertainer. In the second, as a film maker Dholakia  knows from the onset that the comparisons with characters ‘real’ is obvious so the film maker goes out of his way to prove the goodness of the Raees Alam, as a kind of atonement maybe, not needed  I feel. Thirdly Pakistani actress Mahira Khan is a distraction not really needed to further the story in any way, she hasn’t made the romance look fresh and different.

Somewhere this film reminds me of Satya, then again it reminds me of the Netflix series Narcos maybe because that series is on the life of the drug lord Pablo Escobar, then again it reminded me of the Angry young man movies Don and Deewar of the 70’s n 80’s.  So why watch? For Shahrukh Khan off course for Nawazuddin off course and again for Rahul Dholakia making a really ‘chaat masala’ entertainer. It’s full on paisa vasool, so go to be entertained during this long weekend, if you can get tickets that is.

My Raees Review Rating is 3 stars out of 5
