Out of the box the NOOK Tablet only runs apps downloaded from the B&N Shop. But it's actually pretty easy to set up the tablet to accept third party apps from unknown sources. And once you do that, you can add a new app launcher and a number of apps including the Amazon Appstore and Kindle app.
