Compact ceramic RFID tag for omnidirectional long-range communication

Abstract
Radio frequency identification (RFID) allows to perform a wireless communication with special tags, attached to the objects. One of the key limitations of RFID tag applications is the presence of blind spots in reading. It is related to the use of printed antennas with a directional radiation diagram, while a few existing omnidirectional tag designs have a very low reading range. In this work, we demonstrate the concept of an omnidirectional ceramic tag with a long reading range.

The main operational principle is to use the whole operational frequency band instead of focusing on creating an omnidirectional response at a single frequency. It allows to develop a compact tag that can be omnidirectionally interrogated from a distance of more than 10 meters. Omnidirectional miniature long-range ceramic tags can be extremely useful in numerous practical applications, including the Internet of Things and many others.
