1975 - 2007
Originally, the Shibata stylus was only used n 4-channel cartridges. Supposedly, the line contact shape was needed for proper 4-channel reproduction when actually, it was the low capacitance set-up that resulted in the extended high frequency response. When the 4-channel trend faded, manufacturers used the Shibata stylus in the premium stereo models claiming better definition, clarity and detail since the stylus traced more of the record groove wall. In addition, the tracking force was spread over a larger portion of the groove wall reducing record and stylus wear.
