G.-F. Händel (1685- 1759)
Italian text by Nicola Francesco Haym, adapted from Carlo Sigismondo Capece's "Tolomeo et Alessandro".

"Tolomeo, Re di Egitto" HWV 25 , Atto III
Recitativo " Che piu si tarda omai"
Aria "Stille amare, gia vi sento"

Händel's "Tolomeo" was the 13th and last opera he wrote for the Royal Academy. Written in 1728 it came after a long run of great operas but by the time it was written, the Royal Academy was running out of money. So Tolomeo hasn´t great scenic requirement and requires a cast of just five singers, but what a cast; at the first performance on 30 April 1728 in King's Theatre, London the cast included three of the greatest opera singers in Europe: castrato Francesco Bernardi Senesino (as Tolomeo), Francesca Cuzzioni (as his wife Seleuce) , Faustina Bordoni (as Elisa), castrato Antonio Baldi (Alessandro, brother of Tolomeo) and bass Giuseppe Maria Boschi (Araspe, King of Cyprus ).
"Tolomeo " was revived with revisions on 19 May 1730 and 2 January 1733.
