👉 What are ELSS funds?
ELSS funds are a type of mutual funds which allow you to claim tax benefits under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act for the invested amount. The tax deduction is available upto ₹1.5 lakhs which is the cumulative total including amounts investing in PPF, PF, life insurance policies etc.
ELSS funds are multi-cap in nature i.e. quite like multi-cap funds (now flexi-cap funds), fund managers of ELSS funds can invest across market capitalization categories like large, mid and small cap companies. There are two distinct advantages of this - a) the portfolio of ELSS funds is well-diversified and b) the funds participate in the economy's growth sectors & the lock-in period in these funds helps the fund manager take improved stock calls.
👉 How did we shortlist the best tax saving mutual funds?
The started with the top funnel of 38 available ELSS funds. The first criteria we applied is that the funds should be atleast 3 years old. This shrunk the list to 34 funds. Then we looked at the performance of the funds at different time frames, how the funds performed in falling markets (i.e. downside protection), how many times the fund did better than the benchmark and the alpha generated by the fund as compared to other ELSS funds in the category.
