Rafael Nadal had won in Madrid twice previously and had recently destroyed
Djokovic to win in Monte Carlo a couple weeks prior. Fernando Verdasco has never beaten Nadal, and had never won a set against Nadal on clay in their previous 6 meetings, including a 6-0; 6-4 loss to Nadal a week prior in the Barcelona semifinals. But somehow Verdasco shocked his countryman in 3 tough sets. It may have had something to do with the odd surface coloring...
