In this Physics video in Hindi for Class 11 we explained what different systems of units are and what international system of units is. We also explained how to convert measured values of physical quantities from one unit to another.

A unit of measurement is a definite magnitude of a quantity, defined and adopted by convention or by law, that is used as a standard for measurement of the same kind of quantity.

Measurement is defined as the process of comparison of an unknown quantity with a known or standard quantity.

A physical quantity is a property of a material or system that can be quantified by measurement.
e.g., length, mass, time, volume, density, speed etc.

Base quantities are those quantities that have not been defined in terms of other quantities.
Derived quantities are those whose definitions are based on other physical quantities (base quantities).

International System of Units (SI) :

The SI was developed by General Conference on Weights and Measures in 1960 from the MKS system.  It has, periodically, been updated since then.

The SI is used around the world as the preferred system of units, the basic language for science, technology, industry and trade.

Following 7 base quantities were included in SI :

Length → measured in metre
Mass → measured in kilogram
Time → measured in metre second
Electric current → measured in metre ampere
Thermodynamic temperature → measured in metre kelvin
Amount of substance →  measured in metre mole
Luminous intensity →  measured in metre candela

Besides the seven base units, there are two more units that are defined for plane angle and solid angle.

There are two rules for naming units :

1.  The name of the unit should be written in small letters.
e.g., metre, second, newton, ampere, watt, coulomb, pascal
Exception : Celcius

2. The symbols are generally written in small letters, but symbols named after a scientist start with capital letter.
e.g., m for metre, s for second, N for newton, A for ampere, W for watt, C for coulomb, Pa for pascal
Exception : L  for litre

Some units, outside SI, retained for general use. e.g., minute, hour, litre, quintal, tonne, hectare etc.
