Daagh Dehlvi (Urdu: داغ دہلوی‎, Hindi: दाग़ देहलवी) born Nawab Mirza Khan (Urdu: نواب مرزا خان‎, Hindi: नवाब मिर्ज़ा ख़ान) (25 May 1831 – 17 March 1905) was an outstanding poet famous for his Urdu ghazals and belonged to the old Delhi school of Urdu poetry. He wrote romantic and sensuous poems and ghazals in simple and chaste Urdu, minimising usage of Persian words. He laid great emphasis on the Urdu idiom and its usage. He wrote under the takhallus (Urdu word for nom de plume) Daagh Dehlvi (the meanings of Daagh, an Urdu noun, include stain, grief and taint while Dehlvi means belonging to or from Dehli or Delhi).

Daagh belonged to the Dabistan-e-Dehli (Dehli school of thought) and never allowed western influences on his poetry. He started reciting poetry at the age of ten and his forte was the romantic version, the ghazal. He became very popular for his exuberant style of poetry. Unlike the elitist style by the poets of the time, his style was simple and was well received by both, the common man and the elite.

Tumhare Khat Me Naya Ek Salaam Kis Ka Tha,
Na Tha Raqeeb To Aakhir, Woh Naam Kis Ka Tha.

(Raqeeb= rival, competitor, enemy, opponent)


Woh Qatl Kar Ke Mujhe Har Kisi Se Poochte Hain,
Yeh Kaam Kis Ne Kiya, Yeh Kaam Kis Ka Tha.

Wafaa Karenge, Nibhayenge, Baat Maanenge,
Tumhein Bhi Yaad Hai Kuch, Yeh Kalaam Kis Ka Tha.

Raha Na Dil Me Woh Be-Dard, Aur Dard Raha,
Muqeem Kaun Hua, Aur Maqaam Kis Ka Tha.

(Muqeem= residing, stationed, fixed, inhabitant;
Maqaam= dwelling, occasion, place, position)


Na Pooch-Gachh Thi Kisi Ki Wahan Na Aao-Bhagat,
Tumhari Bazm Me Kal, Ehtimaam Kis Ka Tha.

(Pooch-Gachh= examination, ask, enquire;
Aao-Bhagat= Welcome; a civil reception or salutaion;
Ehtimaam= care, preparation, planning)


Tamaam Bazm Jise Sun Ke Reh Gayi Mushtaaq,
Kaho Woh Tazkira-e-Na-Tamaam Kis Ka Tha.

(Mushtaaq= ardent, fond, desirous;
Tazkira-e-Na-Tamaam= incomplete description)


Humare Khat Ke To Purze Kiye Padha Bhi Nahi,
Suna Jo Tune Ba-Dil, Woh Payaam Kis Ka Tha.

(Ba-Dil= with heart;
Payaam= message)

Uthayi Kyun Na Qayaamat Aduu Ke Koonche Me,
Lihaaz Aap Ko Waqt-e-Khiraam Kis Ka Tha.

(Aduu= enemy, foe, rival;
Koonche= narrow street, lane;
Lihaaz= regard, consideration, respect, modesty;
Waqt-e-Khiraam= slow paced time)


Guzar Gaya Woh Zamaana, Kahein To Kis Se Kahein,
Khayaal Mere Dil Ko, Subh-o-Shaam Kis Ka Tha.

Humein To Hazrat-e-Waaiz Ki Zid Ne Pilwaayi,
Yahan Irada-e-Shurb-e-Mudaam Kis Ka Tha.

(Hazrat-e-Waaiz= mister preacher;
Irada-e-Shurb-e-Mudaam= intention to always drink together)


Agarche Dekhne Wale Tere Hazaaron The,
Tabaah Haal Bohat Zer-e-Baam Kis Ka Tha.

(Agarche= although;
Zer-e-Baam= under the roof)


Woh Kaun Tha Ki Tumhein Jis Ne Be-Wafaa Jaanaa,
Khayal-e-Khaam Yeh Sauda-e-Khaam Kis Ka Tha.

(Khayal-e-Khaam= raw idea, thought;
Sauda-e-Khaam= raw material)


Inhi Sifaat Se Hota Hai Aadmi Mashhoor,
Jo Lutf Aam Woh Karte, Yeh Naam Kis Ka Tha.

(Sifaat= attribute, praise, qualities)


Har Ek Se Kehte Hain Kya "Daagh" Be-Wafaa Nikla,
Yeh Pooche Un Se Koi, Woh Ghulam Kis Ka Tha..!!
