The German who defied the Nazis - Helmuth James von Moltke

Helmuth James von Moltke (1907-1945) was a German jurist and a leading member of the German resistance against Nazi dictatorship during World War II. He was born into a prominent family of military officers in Germany and was a descendant of the famous 19th-century German Field Marshal Helmuth von Moltke.

Helmuth James von Moltke was a key figure in the Kreisau Circle, a group of German intellectuals and professionals who opposed the Nazi regime and sought to establish a new, democratic Germany after the war. He played an important role in organizing and coordinating resistance efforts, including helping to plan Operation Valkyrie, a failed attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler in 1944.

Moltke was arrested by the Gestapo in early 1944 and was ultimately convicted of treason and executed by hanging on January 23, 1945. He is remembered today as a hero of the anti-Nazi resistance movement and a symbol of German courage and moral resistance against tyranny.
