On August 5, Kurdistan Region
On August 5, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani arrived in Iran to attend Ebrahim Raisi’s inauguration.
He was welcomed at the airport with the Kurdistan flag flying alongside the Iranian one.
There was no Iraqi flag. Kurds were delighted.
But two days later, Iran’s foreign ministry said it was a “mistake.”
When Kurdish leaders travel abroad, they are often greeted with two flags: Kurdistan and Iraq
The Kurdistan flag was first raised in an official capacity in 1946 when Qazi Muhammad declared the creation of the Republic of Mahabad, the short-lived independent Kurdish state, in the city of Mahabad, western Iran.
He was hanged for treason a year later.
The flag was adopted by the Kurdistan Region in 1992.
Flying the flag is an acknowledgement of the constitutionally-recognized Kurdistan Region, but critics say it fuels Kurdish independence hopes,
and infringes on Iraq’s federal authority.

A nationalist Turkish politician called it a “disgrace” to fly the Kurdistan banner in Turkey.

For Newroz in 2017, then governor of Kirkuk Najmaldin Karim raised the flag in the disputed city. “Kurdistan’s flag is not only the flag of the Kurds… It is the flag of Kurdistan, which is a place for everyone,” he said.
