Escaping the Airport: A Layover in Dubai

I had a quick Dubai Layover, this is how I spent it.

After an amazing trip, I was heading back to Spain. On the way, I had an 8 hour layover in Dubai.  And, though I was tired, I really didn't want to spend it all in the airport. So, I headed out to explore the city.  I'd never been to Dubai before, aside from the airport, so I was pretty keen on exploring a bit. When I booked my ticket, actually, I specifically planned in this Dubai layover.  I had the option of an 8 hour layover or a 3 hour layover, and I went with 8 so I could explore the city.
In particular, I wanted to see Burj Kalifa which is the talled free-standing building in the world.  
It is impressive. It really is. And, my layover in Dubai was totally worth it just to get to go and see it and climb up to the view above. I did the "To the Top" of the Burj, and had a nice breakfast at the bottom after.
If I was smart, I would have spent the rest of the day just exploring around the Burj Kalifa. But, I was intent on making the most of my layover in Dubai, so I jumped on the metro and headed towards Dubai Marina.
In reality, I should have just stuck around Burj Kalifa.  The metro took up too much of my time and before I knew it I had to get back to the airport.
