The First Deputy Chairman of the Government of Saint Petersburg Vladimir Putin shows Prince Charles around St Petersburg in 1994. Everyone expected Prince Charles to become a head of state, but few would have bet on Putin achieving the same.

One of the men who helped Putin along the way, Anatoly Aleksandrovich Sobchak, is filmed exchanging gifts with Prince Charles. Sobchak was the first democratically elected Mayor of St Petersburg and mentor to future Russian presidents Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev.
