After WW-II the French military adopted the model 49-56 Mas as its main battle rifle. This rifle turned out to be a tremendously good rifle. It is rugged, and extremely reliable. It is very low maintenance even in harsh conditions. Its like the old Timex commercials used to say. Takes a licking, but keeps on ticking. It was originally chambered for the 7.5mm French rifle round, and saw action with the French army in a number of different countries, including Vietnam.
