What’s Love Got to Do With It? Movie review by Sucharita Tyagi – Shabana Azmi plays the Khan matriarch, who has held onto her protective blanket ie her idea of cultural values for so long, the resulting warmth has turned her heart cold. She makes jalebis and biryani for her white British neighbor but keeps her guard up at all times too. Behind the loving mother, is a brown woman who’s been treated in the country she lives in, as only a member of a certain community. To shield herself from the hurt, for her all white people are the same too, not to be trusted with family. Maybe I'm reading too much into this seemingly sweet story, but like Zenobia Shroff in the Big Sick, kahaani ka conflict bhi who hain, aur resolution bhi who, aided by a son, played wonderfully by Shazad Latif. A man raised with a certain set of values, which he’s quickly realizing aren’t all he’s made them out to be. Its been reported that Princess Diana was a close personal friend of Jemima khan’s, so to hear this man talk to a reporter about his marriage and say “whatever in love means”, a line famously said by diana about his new bride lady di, is more than just a tongue in cheek throwaway moment. The movie is telling you that maybe this man will get a happy ending, but he isn’t absolved of his mistakes, the hearts he’s broken, in the time he’s taken to realise the error of his ways.
