Flour moths, formally known as Mediterranean Flour Moths, are very similar to another common stored product pest, the Indianmeal Moth. However, it’s important to distinguish between the two as they may have different approaches to treatment. The flour moth grows up to half an inch in length, and is on average a little larger than the Indianmeal moth. Flour moths are usually a dull, speckled grey or tan, and there may be one or two distinct wave-shaped stripes. As the wings become worn, the stripes become faded. They have two thin antennae, but unlike some garden-variety moths, these moths’ antennae are slender and lack feathering. Flour moth larvae look very similar to Indianmeal moths. They can grow to be up to ⅔ of an inch in length, and they have pale, fleshy bodies with dark heads.

To confirm flour moth activity, look in and around your pantry or where packaged foods are stored. Flour moth larvae will travel away from food sources to pupate. If you find pupae among the shelves or other parts of the house, that’s a start, but focus on finding infested packages. Check inside packages for webbing, matured larvae, and moths. Be sure to check any drawers and shelving for cracks & crevices larvae can hide in. Take note of which foods are infested and where you’ve seen larvae, as you’ll use this information to direct your treatment.

After identifying your pest and inspecting for activity on your property, it’s time treatment. Before starting any treatment, be sure to wear your personal protective equipment, or PPE, and remember to keep all the people and pets off the treated areas until dry. Before starting your treatment, you need to clear out your pantry. Start by throwing out boxed and bagged foodstuffs. That sounds excessive, but if you’ve found at least one infested package, odds are there are flour moths in your other packaged foods. Next, vacuum all cracks and crevices in your pantry shelving. If your shelving is adjustable, clean out the peg holes with a toothpick and vacuum. Wipe down the pantry shelves with water to clean up any food residue. Do not use any strong cleaners or bleach. Once you’ve cleared and cleaned your pantry, you’ll need to use insecticides labeled to treat flour beetles like Pyrid and Novacide, then use traps like Pro-Pest Pantry Moth & Beetle Traps to catch and monitor for straggling moths and larvae.

Prevention is essential to keeping pests in check. Even after you’ve applied pesticides, the best way to stop pest activity is to make sure it can’t happen. If you can, buy only about a week or two’s worth of food at a time. Try not to overstock your pantry shelves, because the longer something sits there, the more susceptible it becomes to infestation. When buying dry foods at the grocery store, take a look at the packaging. If you can see the product, try to look for any flour moths, larvae, or other pests. When storing food, it is best to keep it in tight-fitting or sealed containers. Put cereals, grains, and flour in containers that can be tightly air-sealed. Finally, keep up with regular pesticide applications to ensure protection throughout the year. With Novacide’s 7 month residual, we recommend you apply twice a year for preventative applications, and be sure to check traps regularly, replacing them every 3 months.
