The UAE is a coalition of seven small sheikhdoms called Abu Dhabi (capital), Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah and Umm al-Qawwin, which was formed on 2 December 1971 after independence from Britain. This day is celebrated as the UAE National Day.

With 527,970 square kilometers (203,850 square miles), it is the second largest independent Arab state on the peninsula. Its coastline is about 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) long. The Yemeni constitution designates Sanaa as the country's capital, but the city has been occupied by Houthi rebels since 2015, and the Yemeni government has chosen Aden as the interim capital.
