Hernias are a hole in the strength layer of the abdomen. This is a different layer from the muscle - called the fascia. Patients sometimes ask if building up muscle mass in the area can close this hole. While exercise can develop muscle tissue in the area, it cannot build or heal fascia. Because of this, hernias cannot be repaired without surgery. Surgery to repair a hernia involves placing stitches and/or mesh in the area to close this space and prevent bulging.
