This is a video on how I hang Schluter KERDI waterproof membrane over drywall. It's a straight forward process.
Hanging KERDI membrane is similar to hanging wallpaper. Instead of adhesive, you use unmodified thin set mortar. In this instance I use Schluter-Set.
I start by marking the walls for the boundaries of the membrane. I make sure the wall is reasonably flat without large globs of drywall mud. In this instance, I'll be applying the membrane into a window sill as well. I make sure the sill surrounding the window is flush with the drywall. I cut the membrane and dry-fit everything to make sure the install goes smooth.
Next I mix the thin set mortar. While the mortar is allowed to slake, I apply KERDI-fix on the flange of the tub and about 1 inch above it on the drywall. This will bond the membrane to the tub making a water tight seal. I also wipe down the walls with a damp sponge.
After allowing the thin set to slake for 10 minutes I mix it for another three to increase the open time of the mortar. From there, I begin combing thin set on with a 1/8"x1/8" square notched trowel. I embed the membrane into the mortar pushing the air out starting in the middle working my way out to the edges.
I finish up by waterproofing the window sill, faucet spout, mixing valve and shower head arm.
I will be adding a couple of thin pieces of membrane along the bottom outside edge of the tub using KERDI-fix.
All together an install like this takes me 2-3 hours. Because I started and stopped during the process, it increased my time to 4-5 hours.
