DESCRIPTION STARTS

Short Term Capital Gains:
If you hold Equity Shares or units of Equity Mutual Funds for less than 12 months, than the profits or loss made is called Short Term Capital Gains or losses. On the other hand, if the holding period is more than 12 months than it is called Long Term Capital Gains.

Income Tax on Short Term Capital Gains = 15% on the profits
Income Tax on Long Term Capital Gains = 10% of the amount above Rs. 1 Lakh

No Tax need to be paid if the Long Term Capital Gains in a Financial Year is less than Rs. 1 Lakh.
Another important point to note is, in case your Income is below Rs. 2.5 Lakhs in a Financial Year. Let's say your Income is Rs. 2 Lakhs and Short Term Capital Gains is Rs. 1 Lakh, than you add Rs. 50,000 from Short Term Capital Gains to your Income which becomes Rs. 2.5 Lakhs on which you don't need to pay any Income tax, and than you pay only 15% of Tax on Short Term Capital Gains of remaining Rs. 50,000.
