In this video I introduce the fantastic FLIRC and demonstrate the easy Setup in combination with XBMC.

The Flirc USB IR receiver has been around for a while, but it is still my favorite way to control home theater computers. In this video, you will learn what Flirc is. The Flirc is a little USB infra-red receiver that outputs presses on a remote control button as keyboard input to any application such as XBMC.

You can use a simple GUI application to program the Flirc to press any keyboard key through the use of any remote control button.

Over the years, I have tried many remote controls and IR receivers, but nothing has ever worked perfectly until I found this little device.

Getting started with Flirc

Once you have received your own Flirc device (get it here), follow these instructions to set it up properly.

Setting up Flirc is easy and straight forward:

1) Download the Flirc GUI software
2) Install GUI software on your Windows/Mac OSX/Linux computer
3) Plugin the Flirc device to your computer.
4) Select a suitable controller configuration from the "Controllers" menu.
5) Map the keys with your remote.

After the key mapping is completed, you are ready to use the USB IR receiver and your remote control with any computer, since the key mapping is saved directly to the device.

Conclusions

Flirc is the best way to personalize your HTPC controller experience. I have used MCE remotes, iOS applications, HDMI-CEC adapters, keyboards, air mouses and more, but nothing beats the Flirc and universal remote control combination for both flexibility and reliability.

The only downside I can think of is that, as with any infra-red receiver, it will need a direct line of sight. Therefore, as a final tip to improve the usability, I'd recommend using a USB extension cable to bring the USB IR receiver under your TV.
