In today's episode I discuss the techniques that can be used to reduce the appearance of a gummy smile and show a before and after photograph of an example case.

GUMMY SMILE
A gummy smile is diagnosed when there is an excessive amount of gum tissue shown when a person smiles. This can be multi-factorial in nature. In some situations it is skeletal in nature, other times it may be due to the overactivity of the muscles that raise the upper lip, or it may be due to the teeth themselves having a smaller ratio to the gum.
It is important that if you suspect that you have a gummy smile it is correctly diagnosed, as in some situations, if treatment is performed on a non-true gummy smile, an adverse cosmetic effect may be achieved.
TREATMENT OPTIONS
A minimally invasive technique to manage a gummy smile is to use anti-wrinkle treatments over the muscles that elevate the upper lip. The net impact of this will relax the muscle and will no longer be overactive, producing a natural smile. This is temporary in nature and starts to become optimally effective after 2 weeks and can last up to 3-5 months.
Another technique is the use of lip filler. This is useful in those who have low lip volume. By introducing a dermal filler, the volume of the lip increases and so less of the gum is apparent.
There are also other more invasive procedures, such as surgical permanent lowering of the upper lip, which is performed by plastic surgeons. Specialist dentists can also make veneers to increasing the size of the teeth in relation to the gum or remove some of the gum tissue.
