The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin has been the backdrop to the most major historical events in Germany over the past two centuries, bearing silent testimony to political turmoil and transformations.
When it was dedicated in 1791, its architect Carl Gotthard Langhans called the gate a symbol of peace, but it was often the site of bloody unrest and rebellion. It has outlasted kings and emperors, Soviet-inspired insurgency, and two dictatorships. Few other buildings in the world have so often been the backdrop for military parades and marches, for bombastic victory celebrations and political rallies.
