What to do if you just don't get sleepy enough for sleep

If you go through a course of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) you will learn how important it is to only go to bed when you are sleepy enough for sleep. If you aren't sleepy when you go to bed, you will simply spend more time in bed awake, and this can lead to worry and anxiety, which makes sleep more difficult.

In addition, the more time you spend in bed awake, the more likely you are to try to sleep (which, again, makes sleep more difficult) and the more you will associate the bed with wakefulness rather than sleep.

With that being said, I hear from many people who tell me they just don't feel sleepy. The fact of the matter is that if you remain awake, eventually you will get sleepy. What can happen is that we either forget what the cues of sleepiness are, or we are too occupied with other thoughts or activities to notice them.

Reserving the hour before the start of your sleep window as a time for nothing but relaxing and enjoyable activities can help you recognize sleepiness cues — and CBT-I techniques such as sleep restriction and stimulus control can help build sleep drive (and sleepiness) to improve your sleep over the long-term.
