Welcome to the Castle of
Welcome to the Castle of Leiria. I'm incredibly excited to show you my favorite castle in this new episode of Portuguese Medieval Castles.

The History of the Leiria Castle starts with the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, and the Reconquest. In 1135, while the king was invading Galicia up north and at the same time protecting and attacking the Muslims to the south, he decided to build from scratch a castle in a strategic point of defense. Along with the castle, a village started to form, and both got the name Leiria.
Two years later, in 1137, the castle got attacked and the men protecting it were forced to leave, and only in 1139 was it recovered to be lost again at the end of the same year, this time making prisoners.

At the end of the same century, the population united in an association to study and rebuild the castle, but only in 1915 the restoration works started, with the project of the renowned architect Ernesto Korrodi. Meanwhile, in June of 1910, the castle was classified as a national monument. The process and bureaucracy during the reconstruction were difficult but the works continued until the 1990s, always with Korrodi's drawings of the castle. In 2020 and 2021 the castle endured works of prequalification, cleaning and new accesses to the caste.
And at the end of the video, I'll let the legend of Queen Saint Elizabeth and the Miracle of the Roses. Queen Isabel left the Castle of Leiria on a winter morning to distribute bread to the poor. D. Dinis, her husband, knowing of her kindness and her morning habit of offering bread to others, followed her in the streets and surprised her by asking where she was going and what she was carrying in his lap. The Queen said she was going to the convent. Not satisfied with the answer, D. Dins insisted and asked, "What are you taking there?"
To what she relayed, "They are roses, my lord!! They are roses!!"
