It was mass-produced in 1967-1981 by the Saratov Aviation Plant. 1013 aircraft were built, of which 125 were exported.
The aircraft is highly reliable and safe to operate. It can take off if any of the three engines fail, and can perform horizontal flight even on one engine. When designing the Yak-40, the Design Bureau included an excess safety margin in its design and adapted the aircraft for flights from unpaved airfields. The aircraft is designed for flights on local air routes up to 1,500 km long at a speed of 510 km/h. Accommodates from 27 to 32 passengers.
