The Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series GXL, a long-established favorite in the rugged 4x4 segment, enters a new era in Australia with a substantial upgrade. Since its introduction in 2007, the 70 Series has been synonymous with robust performance, primarily powered by the 1VD-FTV 4.5-litre turbo-diesel V8 engine coupled with a five-speed manual transmission. The latest upgrade, however, marks a significant shift, introducing a new 1GD 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission – a first in the history of the 70 Series.

This upgrade offers the LandCruiser in various models, including the five-door Wagon, three-door Troop Carrier, and Single and Double-Cab Chassis forms. The pricing begins at $75,600 plus on-road costs for the WorkMate 76 Series Wagon equipped with the new engine. It's worth noting that this new 2.8-litre engine is exclusive to the Workmate 76 Series Wagon, while other models in the range offer both the new and traditional powertrains.

Toyota's Australian Vice President, Sean Hanley, emphasizes that the 70 Series has been a go-to choice for individuals and sectors requiring durable and capable 4x4s, such as in farming, mining, and agriculture. The addition of the new powertrain not only broadens the range's appeal but also enhances aspects like weight, payload, and fuel efficiency, which are crucial for its diverse customer base.

The newly introduced 2.8-litre engine, with 150kW at 3400rpm and 500Nm from 1600-2800rpm, has undergone specific adjustments for the 70 Series to ensure optimal performance under strenuous conditions and heavy towing. This includes maintaining the strong 3500kg braked towing capacity. Meanwhile, the 4.5-litre V8 engine, producing 151kW and 430Nm, remains an option for all 70 Series models except the 76 Series WorkMate.

The GXL grade is particularly notable for its enhanced off-road capabilities, equipped with front and rear locking differentials, a feature optionally available on other variants like the GX Single-Cab Chassis and WorkMate Double-Cab Chassis. The updated LandCruiser 70 Series also sports a refreshed look, drawing inspiration from its lineage. It includes circular LED headlamps, a new grille design reminiscent of the 75 Series, and a hood vent nodding to the original 40 Series.

Inside, the GXL welcomes a modernized cabin with a newly designed instrument cluster echoing the 40 Series aesthetic, a 4.2-inch color multi-information display, and a 6.7-inch multimedia system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Enhanced safety features in the updated LandCruiser 70 Series include lane departure alert, road sign assist, automatic high beam, and downhill assist control for the four-cylinder versions. Wagon variants also benefit from a new reversing camera for easier parking.

The vehicle maintains its classic color scheme, with an additional Eclipse Black option for the Wagon variant. Toyota covers the upgraded 70 Series with a five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty, extended to seven years for the engine and driveline. The first five years/100,000km come with capped-price servicing, ensuring cost-effective maintenance.

In summary, the Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series GXL's latest upgrade is a harmonious blend of the model's storied ruggedness and modern technological advancements, poised to attract a broader spectrum of 4x4 enthusiasts and professionals.
