Meditation or dhyana is not simply a matter of making your mind silent (shunya) or peaceful (shanti). There are many types of meditation that involve various aspects of your mind (manas, buddhi) and consciousness (chit, chaitanya). In all these techniques, it's crucial to understand the relationship betweed consciousness or awareness and the various kinds of mental activities (vrittis) revealed by it. On one hand, consciousness is sakshi, the awareful witness or observer of those activities. But from another perspective, vrittis arise in the metaphoric ocean of awareness like ripples in water.

Swami Tadatmananda is a traditionally-trained teacher of Advaita Vedanta, meditation, and Sanskrit. For more information, please see: https://www.arshabodha.org/
