Mioritic Shepherd was selected from a natural breed of the Carpathians , the main reason being utility . It is an excellent herding dog , incorruptible guardian accompanying a wonderful dog . It is a very old breed that was preserved only because of the shepherds , being widely used by the Sibiu region ( Mărgineni ) or Săcelele Brasov ( shepherds ) , hence the popular name Mioritic of " Barak shepherd " .

Thanks to vigorous appearance , this breed has many amateurs in Romania . It is considered by some the only dog that has a chance to escape alive when the bear attacked .

The standard was drafted by the Romanian Kennel Club in 1981. Commission RCA technique adapted and revised standard on 29 March 2002 in accordance with the model set by the FCI in Jerusalem.
