2. Israel: Invasions of Lebanon, part 1

In 1982, the IDF invaded Lebanon in order to destroy the PLO.  Though Arafat and the PLO was exiled to Tunisia as a result, the Israeli occupation gave birth to Hezballah ("Party of God"), a Shi'a resistance group similar in many ways to the later Hamas.  In 2006, Israel again invaded Lebanon, this time to destroy Hezballah; it did not succeed but instead strengthened Hezballah's position.
