Split application, variable rates, stabilizers and a side-dresser with Y-drops: it all adds up to better nitrogen use for Binbrook, Ont., corn grower Nik Oreskovic.

On this episode of The Sharp Edge, Oreskovic tells Maizex agronomist Henry Prinzen how he has parlayed Ontario On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF) cost-share funding into an advanced nitrogen management strategy to mitigate denitrification and better manage nitrogen rates.

At the core of the strategy is the modified side dress applicator that was purchased with funding support from OFCAF . By removing the coulters and replacing them with Y-drops, Oreskovic says he can now better place nitrogen at the base of plants, in the root zone.

Oreskovic is a believer in split application, which allows him to watch the corn grow and advance during the season and react to the crop and its nitrogen needs. Depending on the growing environment, he can fine-tune rates and apply what the crop requires.

Variable rate application is also a key part of Oreskovic's approach. Across a field, he can dial back rates in high organic matter zones, and in lighter soils where there is less nitrogen mineralization, while increasing rates where required. "He's saving dollars and still growing the best corn crop possible," says Prinzen.

Oreskovic also shares how he's added nitrogen stabilizers to his management toolbox to further reduce losses, increase efficiency and improve profitability.
