As terrible as other passenger ship disasters have been, the Titanic may seem like the worst. Despite this, many other historic cruise ships met the same fate, but not as well-known as the RMS Titanic. Although the first cruise ships set sail in the 1850s, it wasn't until after the wars were over that taking a vacation at sea became popular. Even before that, cruise ships catering to the wealthy had been built. The development of nautical technology has made cruises far safer than they were in the 19th and 20th centuries, when they were laden with many perils.
