Here in Hawaii, we are lucky enough to host several of the world’s most amazing marine animals, from Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles and Spinner Dolphins to hundreds of species of tropical fish. One particularly beloved annual visitor is the North Pacific Humpback Whale population, who make their way from Alaskan waters to Hawaii each winter to mate, birth, and nurse their young in the shallow, tropical waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands.
Each year, approximately 10,000 humpback whales make their way to Hawaii, and while they can be seen from any island, they’re most frequently seen swimming in the Auau Channel, located conveniently between Maui and the neighbor islands of Lana’i and Moloka’i. Lucky us!
If you plan on traveling to Maui between December and April, whale watching is an absolute must! Nothing can prepare you for what it’s like to see these magnificent animals up close and personal, especially from the water.
At Hawaiian Paddle Sports, we offer unique ways to whale watch for the whole family, including from a kayak, stand up paddleboard, or outrigger canoe. While larger boat tours are the most common way to whale watch on Maui, we find that the noise from the engines and large crowds can limit your experience.
With us, guests have the chance to enjoy on-level views of humpback whales with a much smaller, more intimate group. Keep an eye out for common humpback whale behavior, including pec slaps, head lunges, breaching, spy hopping, fluke diving, and blowing.
