Hi, it's HandyAndy Tech Tips here, and today I'm going to tell you three more ways to fix the black screen of death on Windows 10!
#1: Switching to a different graphics output. So when the Windows 10 upgrade is installed on some computers, it appears to disable the dedicated graphics card (eg. an Nvidia or AMD card) and enable the integrated graphics. The problem arises when you have your monitor plugged into the dedicated graphics; because it's disabled, you'll get a black screen. So, the solution on a desktop PC is simply to unplug your HDMI or DVI cable from your graphics card, and plug it into your motherboard graphics. You should then see your login screen appear on your monitor. Now you can begin using your computer again!
#2: Booting into Safe Mode. If you only have one graphics option, so only dedicated graphics or only integrated, then you might need to boot into Safe Mode to sort out the driver issues. To do this, what you first need to do is watch my video on creating recovery media for Windows 10. Click the screen now to watch that video. After you've created the media, then boot from it. After the boot process has completed, you'll see a language selection screen, on which you need to click Next. You'll then see the Install Now screen; click the little link at the bottom which says "Repair your
computer". Then the Troubleshoot screen will come up, click on Advanced Options. Then, on the Advanced Options screen, click Startup Settings. Finally, on the Startup Settings screen, you'll see a small Restart button in the bottom right hand corner; click that. When your PC reboots, you'll see a couple of options, and you need
to select one by pressing a number on your keyboard. Press 5 to enter Safe Mode with Networking.
So, after all that, you'll finally be in Safe Mode! But there's still more to do. So firstly, you'll need to press the Windows key and R on your keyboard; this will open the Run dialog. Into this dialog, type devmgmt.msc and press Enter. Now Device Manager will open, and you'll see all these categories of hardware listed. You're interested in fixing your graphics card, so click the small little triangle next to "Display adaptors". Find your primary graphics
card - in my case, it's an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M - then right click on it and click Properties. Go to the Driver tab and simply click Update Driver. A new driver should be found and downloaded, then, once you reboot, there should be no more problems with the black screen!
But if that still doesn't work, then there's still one more trick I want to talk to you about.
#3: The Windows key + P trick. Some people have reported that a bug in some Windows 10 display drivers causes them to create a second, virtual monitor, on which your desktop is placed. This means that your primary monitor is left with a black screen and a mouse cursor, nothing else. The solution in this case is to simultaneously press the Windows key and the P key on your keyboard. This is the keyboard shortcut used for changing mirroring options when you have more than one monitor connected. As there are four mirroring options, you might need to press the shortcut a couple of times before it works.
