Middle Fork Gila River Backpacking - In this episode of my Continental Divide Trail Thru Hike Documentary, I hike from Doc Campbell's Post to Pie Town. It's a 6.5 day, 145 mile hike through one of the most incredible places I've ever hiked. The Gila Wilderness is the World's first wilderness area, and at 558,000 acres, is the largest in New Mexico. Highlights of this section include 40 miles of hiking along the Middle Fork Gila River below 1000 foot sheer cliffs, hot springs, a bear sighting, and a climb up one of the last remaining manned fire towers in New Mexico.
Backpacking the Middle Fork Gila River is an amazing experience. The Gila River is one of the best sections of the Continental Divide Trail thru hike. After leaving the Gila Cliff Dwellings, I hike the middle fork gila river to Jordan Hot Springs via the Little Bear Canyon CDT alternate, highly recommend it. Bring your fly rod and take a shot at catching the Gila Trout, native to the Gila River. I would love to hike the East Fork Gila River and West Fork Gila River someday as well, the entire Gila Wilderness is incredible, really.
