Spindle Clamp -If you cannot unscrew the chuck on an engineer's lathe you need a spindle clamp/lock

If your lathe has a chuck that screws onto the spindle shaft, and does not have a spindle lock it is a good idea to make a spindle clamp. This simple device clamps onto the spindle gear in the gear train to prevent the spindle from rotating as you unscrew the chuck. With the clamp in place put a length of hexagonal bar stock in the chuck and use a spanner or socket to unscrew it. A commonly used alternative is to put the lathe in back gear and a bar across the jaws of the chuck to unscrew it. But the gears are cast iron and break quite easily. It is better to leave back-gear disengaged and clamp the shaft instead. This video shows a spindle clamp being made for this purpose.

In the South Bend book, "How to Run a Lathe", it shows how to remove a chuck without breaking teeth off the spindle gears, the chuck is removed using its own mass and inertia, as follows; open the chuck jaws until they protrude about 1/ 3 of the jaws length past the outer circumference, using a nice piece of wood 3"x 3"x 4" long cut square and placed on the back of the bed shears in turn resting on the chuck against one of the protruding open jaws of the chuck, now spin the chuck backwards by hand with some speed against the wood and the sudden stop inertia will loosen the thread.  I use this method to remove the chucks on my lathes which has no locking spindle with 100% success.
Cast iron back plates are self lubricating and need no oil, just clean the threads, and I mean clean the threads properly, a tiny bit of swarf will gall the threads on any spindle to chuck mounting.
