After a middling performance from the Type 32 in 1923, Ettore Bugatti went back to the drawing board and nearly started over from scratch for the Type 35.  Using a more conventional design like the Fiat series, the Type 35 initially used the same 2 liter naturally aspirated engine, though many different engines would be used during its lifetime.  Unique, and ahead of his time, Bugatti used lightweight aluminum wheels, with the brake drums built into the rim, which meant the brakes were conveniently changed out during pit stops.

The Type 35 made its debut at the 1924 French Grand Prix at Lyonne, a fast public road of mostly straights, not exactly ideal for the non supercharged Bugatti.  For the 1925 Targa Florio it was a much better fit.  With better brakes and less weight than most competitors, Bartolomeo Costantini won the first of an eventual 5 Targas in a row for Bugatti.
