Learning to play my favorite
Learning to play my favorite version of Lamouni Li Gharou Minni, performed by Ghalia Benali featuring Tom Cohen's brilliant mandolin playing. I believe the original song is by Tunisian singer Lofti Bouchnak.
Until this week, I hadn't picked up a mandolin in the better part of a decade, and the instrument i'm playing currently has SERIOUS intonation problems (if you tune the open strings, they are a whole half step sharp by the time you reach 12th fret)-- this is maddening, and you're hearing as close as i could get to "in tune." This is what comes from a decade of neglect-- I'll have to get that fixed. But learning this piece was a lot of fun! As always, it's amateur hour and this is all by ear over the course of an afternoon or two, so don't take it too seriously.
