Here’s a transcript of the video:
Touko Laaksonen aka Tom of Finland is one of the most well-known finnish artists.
During the last few years Tom of Finland has downright exploded before our eyes into a national phenomenon and commercial success. There’s stamps, sheets, textiles, coffee, sex toys and even fire blankets branded with Tom’s illustrations. Next week a movie of him is premiering in addition to a musical that’s already playing. This is Ville Erola, who’s starring in the musical as Kake, Tom’s most iconic character.
Why has Tom of Finland become a national hero, who we celebrate in honor of Finland’s 100th year of independence? Here’s five huge audiences who embrace Tom’s art like the peach emoji embraces the eggplant.
1. Gay men
...are the obvious audience. Tom’s drawings hit hard internationally already in the 1950s because they expanded the identity of gay men. The feminine stereotype of gay men didn’t turn Tom on, so he created completely new imagery. Tom’s men are strong, masculine, joyful and carefree.
2. LGBTIQ+ community
Tom’s art is one symbol for the freedom of sexuality. Even though Touko kept his orientation secret in fear of being persecuted, his drawings show how sexuality (or being different) isn’t something to hide but something to enjoy and carry with Pride. (Pride montage)
3. Heterosexual women and other admirers of the male body.
In an exhibition in Liverpool 55 percent of the visitors were heterosexual women. Curator Gary Everett thought that “Tom can be quite liberating for women because it gives them the chance to see men objectified in a way that women have been objectified for centuries."
4. Men
For a lot of us men Tom’s men are great role models.
Ancient greeks considered nude athletic male bodies embodiments of all that was best in humanity. Tom’s men are like Greek and Roman statues, that remind us of the ideal male body and healthy way of living. They are like instagram gym pics from the nineteen-hunderds. Fittingly, Tom’s first published picture appeared on the cover of a muscle magazine (Physique pictorial)
5. Everyone fighting for human rights
Touko’s career is an example how the world changes around you if you dare to express yourself despite the pressure outside of you. The next question is who will become the symbolic revolutionary for for example transsexual equality issues, that still remain unsolved in Finland. Celebrating phenomenons like Tom of Finland has been and continues to be a public statement for human rights.
