Making a "part 2" of the video "World Capital of Architecture", now following line 3 of the VLT, passing through the most modern part of the city center and heading towards one of the busiest avenues until the 70s in the center of the city. Rio de Janeiro, the Avenida Marechal Floriano.
The city of Rio de Janeiro had a different geography than we see today. A hill called Castelo hill in downtown Rio de Janeiro was located in what is now known as Castelo, a sub-district of downtown. Since the arrival of the Royal family in Brazil, the hill was already considered a problem for the city, as it hindered the circulation of the wind and impeded the flow of water to the sea. With the urban reform of Pereira Passo that took place in the first decade of the 20th century, the Castelo hill was not disturbed, however, in 1922, the hill was totally destroyed and its lands were taken to various parts of the south to fill in the lower parts of several neighborhoods in the south zone, which were developing during this period.
Because the destruction of the Castelo hill happened in the third decade of the 20th century, this region did not undergo the urban reform of Pereira Passos, and ended up with a different architecture, and in some parts, much more modern than the other part of downtown Rio.
Through this video route, we can see at least 3 periods of Rio de Janeiro. A part of the city after the Castelo hill, part of the reform of Pereira Passos and another part of the Imperial period of Brazil. The city center of Rio de Janeiro exudes history.
